2018: European Capital of Culture to be hosted by Malta

The Council of the EU has decided that in 2018 the European Capital of Culture will be hosted by a Maltese and a Dutch city. On 15 May, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport launched an Inter Ministerial Committee responsible for the preparation for the event and headed by architect David Felice, through a press launch opened by the Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Ms Dolores Cristina.

The Minister presented the European Capital of Culture as a catalyst for the cultural development and the transformation of a city, which will also benefit the whole of Malta in economic, social and cultural terms.

The purpose of the establishment of this Inter Ministerial Committee for the European Capital of Culture is to ensure that Malta’s delivery of this cultural event shall be of the highest possible calibre, demonstrating excellence on a European level, and generating the greatest possible benefit for society. In this sense, the Inter Ministerial Committee also has to assist in the preparations leading to the selection and nomination of a Maltese city for this prestigious title. This part of the process has to be completed by 2013.
