Announcement of Creativity Awards - Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport

To celebrate the European Year for Creativity and Innovation, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth & Sport proposes to award a Prize for Creativity during culture-related award ceremonies to be held in Malta throughout the year

The Ministry is offering this prize to the organisations that during 2009 will hold competitions on a national-scale that include a strong element of creativity and innovation.

Upon declaring 2009 as the European Year for Creativity and Innovation, the European Union emphasised that these two elements are fundamental tools for the development of a strong society that must meet its social, economic and cultural challenges.

A study commissioned by the European Commission reveals the important contribution of creativity to society, particularly in view of the difficulties that large and multi-national companies are facing around the world. Therefore, it is believed that the pillars of creativity and innovation may sustain and prepare society to face the current challenges.

The Government is determined to create an awareness of the importance of creativity and innovation, to stimulate research and education, celebrate and disseminate good practices and to generate policy debate. The vision for the European Year of Creativity is to improve the quality of life of the Maltese citizen whilst contributing to Europe’s economic prosperity through investment in creativity and innovation.

The Lisbon Agenda places creativity and innovation at the heart of an economy based on knowledge and the Maltese Government is determined, through policy and other measures, to encourage the growth of a society based on creativity and innovation.

As a step in this direction, the Ministry of Education, Culture Youth and Sport will this year award a Prize for Creativity in recognition of the efforts of individuals in the artistic and cultural field to be more creative and innovative in their work.

During the Journalism Awards ceremony held on Saturday May 2, 2009, journalists Ariadne Massa and The Times photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi won the special awards for creativity in news journalism and photo journalism. The Fashion Awards in conjunction with creativity and innovation will be held on Saturday May 23, 2009.
